Winnemucca Chill Out - 2009 : Snow camp trip with the NorCalHikers. Paige or Steve or someone got a dialog going and pretty soon we had a group. People came from Quincy, Gold River, Santa Rosa, Sacramento, Cameron Park, Marin and who knows. We met at the Carson Pass Sno-Park, got on the snowshoes, and trekked our way to a bluff over Winnemucca Lake. The weather was nice, but it got chilly overnight. My camera decided to take a break when the temps got cold. We had a little adventure on the hike out, as wind blew some gear around (retrieved OK), and at least one hiker got a little disoriented in the braided trails going every which way. That's why we take a whistle! Walky-talkies came in handy, too. All was well, and we capped off the trip with a lunch at the Kirkwood Restaurant. Here are pics by Paige, Jason, and Barbara.

Mojave National Preserve 2007 : Cindy and I joined up with the SoCal Hikers on a car-camp-dayhike-4WD adventure in the Mojave National Preserve. We made a basecamp at the Tamarisk Tree campsite near the Kelso Dunes. While others climbed Old Dad Mountain or scouted old airplane crash sites, Cindy and I hiked to the summit of Silver Peak in the Granite Mountains. Later, we joined everyone in a 4WD trek around the Cinder Cones, stopping at a lava tube and then at an impressive petroglyph site. We also had excellent potluck dinners and great company. This was another great trip. As always, it was nice seeing old friends and making new ones. I am very grateful to Cindy for bringing her awesome Nissan XTerra, and doing all the driving! It was fun hiking with her, too. Jump to these sections: Start°Silver Peak°4WD Trek°Petroglyphs°Kelso Depot°Sunset/Sunrise

Conness 2007 : Kathy said this trip was Bruce's idea, but she was the one who put it together. I joined Kathy, Bruce, Alan, and Dave on a car-camp summit hike to Mount Conness. This dramatic looking peak is along the Sierra crest, north of Tioga Pass. I climbed it once before, 27 years previously. It was great joining up with this group of friends. I was my usual slow self doing the hike, but we all made it to the top, and more importantly, back down again! Thanks to everyone for being patient with my slow pace, and especially to Dave who made sure I saw which way the faster hikers were traveling. Kathy took a lot of great photos on this hike ... Here is her photo album. Alan provided some photos shown in this album of things I didn't get, such as bears!

Kearsarge 2007 : Visit to the Owens Valley and Southern Sierra. Combination car-camp and backpack trip with Rich, Jean, Mike, and Mark. During the early part of our trip we spent time with Bob, Geno, Dick, Herb, Frank, and other friends who were biking and hiking in the area. They dayhiked to Kearsarge Pass ahead of us and climbed Mount Gould. Rich, Mark and Jean and I backpacked in to Kearsarge Lakes. Mike dayhiked to the pass with us then headed off to the bristlecone pines in the White Mountains. Extensive damage from the recent Inyo Complex Fires was evident throughout the area. Whew! Got all that? Then check out these photos from my friends: Herb, Geno, and Mike. Here are pics from my 1998 trip over Kearsarge Pass.

Would we be able to do that? A great trip, in any event. Upon returning home, we were saddened to learn of the disappearance of Michael Ficery, who was solo backpacking near the area we visited. He is still missing.
