Day trip with the County Hikers, to the Donner Camp area near Prosser Creek Reservoir, in Truckee. 2006 is the 160th Anniversary of the ordeal of Donner Party, in their attempt to cross the Sierra Nevada. Our day trip was planned by Howdy and Katrina, who shared their knowledge of the subject and guided us along portions of the Emigrant Trail. Most of the hikers in our group used snowshoes, with a couple on skis. It was a cool day, with cloudy weather. The snow cover was very thin on our hike, no more than 6 inches at the deepest. It was amazing to think about how the area looked with 12-foot snow depths, as it was for the Donner Family in 1846.
Route map. The reservoir was much lower when we visited. The lake surface was not visible to us. The area had a thin covering of snow, with a great deal of sage brush and other vegetation exposed.
