Tiocampo (Frank) ... This hike gave me a chance to try out my new Mountainsmith Auspex backpack. I put about 25lbs of gear inside and wore it all day. I liked it! This is a nice pack, but there are a couple of funky items. The chest strap is very flimsy, for example.

Easy day hike with Sacramento Hiking Friends, AKA a Rich Hike. Hiking around Fleming Meadow, near Sly Park, California. Very nice weather; sunny but not too warm at all. A great day with good friends.

Frank Farmer > Pretend mine shaft? Someone made this frame, in a shallow hole in the hillside along the trail.

Frank Farmer > Later in the day, along the canyon rim. We started by hiking down a mile and losing 600', only to hike right back up to the top. Then we took of on a sort of rambling, undulating canyon rim loop hike, of about five miles.

Frank Farmer > A sick, dying tree. This tree has been afflicted with bark beetles, then mauled by woodpeckers hunting the beetles, and finally assaulted by fungi (mushrooms) growing out of the old beetle/woodpecker holes.
