Frank Farmer  > Day-Trips > Nattkemper-Goodspeed Trail 2006
Dayhike with old friend Jean and new friend Amy, up the Nattkemper-Goodspeed Trail, from Sugarloaf Ridge State Park to Hood Mountain Regional Park. It was a warm and sunny fall day, above the Valley of the Moon in Sonoma County. (A note about Amy: She is an experienced solo sierra trekker. She survived a near-fatal fall in 2003, followed by several days alone, near-fatal infection, subsequent rescue, several surgeries, and ultimate survival and recovery. Check out her book Angels in the Wilderness.)

Frank Farmer > Nattkemper-Goodspeed Trail (I love typing that!), linking Hood Mountain with Sugarloaf Ridge State Park. This park is located in northern Sonoma Valley, near Kenwood, a few miles south of Santa Rosa. The round-trip hike approaches Hood Mountain from the south. It involves about 2,800' elevation gain and loss, in about 7.5 miles. Here are photos from a 1988 hike up Hood Mountain, from the north.

Frank Farmer > The trail starts in a nice second-growth redwood grove, alongside the road in Sugarloaf Ridge State Park.
Frank Farmer > Bridge over Sonoma Creek. This creek would be downright dangerous to cross in winter!

Frank Farmer > Hood Mountain panorama. We are heading for the green and yellow peaks up there. We have a couple thousand feet to climb up.
Frank Farmer > Trail in the chaparral. A very nice, if cobbly route.
Frank Farmer > Jean and Amy. It was great meeting Amy. She is like most of my hiking friends, I cannot keep up with her pace.
Frank Farmer > Amy motors on up the hill. We will be atop that bald ridge shortly.
