Frank Farmer > Hike route map. We hiked to Castle Pass via the road on the west side of Castle Valley, which is used by four-wheelers and mountain bikes, and is quite dusty in spots. We returned via the Pacific Crest Trail route on the east side of the valley. This is a much nicer trail, even though it is slightly longer and also used by horses. The hike was about 7 miles round-trip, with a gain/loss of about 1800 feet.
Frank Farmer > Our original plan was to hike from Saddlebag Lake Dam, but we realized that would give us several hundred feet of uphill at the end of the hike. Instead, we started at Sawmill Campground, hiking up the canyon past Hall Natural Area, to the canyon and ridge between Mt. Conness and White Mountain. We descended by the east ridge route. Everyone else went ahead of me and descended north of the small peak just east of Alpine Lake. I had waypoints loaded for the route shown, by Alpine Lake, and decided to go that way. It all worked out fine, but the descent route was very rugged, with lots of scree and big boulders to deal with. We all agreed that it would have been better to go back down the same way we went up. Our campground at Ellery Lake and favorite dining spot at Tioga Pass Resort are at the lower right on the map.
Frank Farmer > Our route for today. We took the Squaw Valley Tram up to High Camp, then set off over Emigrant Pass for Granite Chief. We came back via what we thought would be a short cut, but the route had some moderately steep cross-country that some in our group had to do very slowly.
Frank Farmer > This is where we hiked. We could show the exact location of the Enchanted Pools, but that would take all the fun out of it. If I were looking for the Enchanted Pools, I would check along the Twin Lakes Creek, just above and downstream of where it is joined by Umpa Lake Creek.
Frank Farmer > Our hike route for today. We stopped for lunch near Round Lake. After that, we took a cross-country route around Long Lake, rejoining the trail north of Island Lake. We contemplated an ascent of Fall Creek Mountain, but decided to save that for another day. It was my first time hiking from this trailhead, and I was pretty impressed!
Frank Farmer > Our hike route map. We took a short cut on the descent. The steepest part of the hike is in the mid-section, as shown by the tight contours.
Frank Farmer > Area map showing the surrounding peaks and lakes.
Frank Farmer > Our hike route to Tomales Point. The park sign indicated 4.7 miles each way, but my GPS figured about 5.2, probably due to wandering off-trail for photos here and there. This is a long, linear out-and-back trip. It reminded me of the White Mountains just a bit.
Frank Farmer > Our hike route. It was an out-and-back trip, of about 6 miles.
