Frank Farmer > This is the route we hiked. We did the loop in a counter-clockwise direction. The total distance hiked was a bit less than 6 miles, with about 2600' elevation gain/loss.
Frank Farmer > Hike route map. We hiked to Castle Pass via the road on the west side of Castle Valley, which is used by four-wheelers and mountain bikes, and is quite dusty in spots. We returned via the Pacific Crest Trail route on the east side of the valley. This is a much nicer trail, even though it is slightly longer and also used by horses. The hike was about 7 miles round-trip, with a gain/loss of about 1800 feet.

Frank Farmer > Our hike route map. We took a short cut on the descent. The steepest part of the hike is in the mid-section, as shown by the tight contours.

Frank Farmer > Trail route map for our Briones Peak Loop Hike. We started at the Bear Creek Staging area, accessed by driving in from CA Hwy 24 at Lafayette, south of Briones Regional Park.
Frank Farmer > Our peak was the gently-rounded one at the left. It would be fun to climb that tower!
